The Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Branch started in 1673 as "Echigoya", a dry-goods store created by Mitsui Takatoshi near the current location of the main branch of the Bank of Japan. There is the main building, which became almost the same size as it is today in 1935, and the annex, which was completed in 2004, with the Mitsukoshi Theatre located on the 6th floor of the main building. In 2016 the main building was designated as an important cultural property of Japan. It possesses history and status, known as Japan's first department store. A store that offers enjoyment steeped in culture, it prides itself as a "culture resort department store".
Takashimaya, established when Shinshichi Iida opened a used clothing and cotton store in Kyoto in 1831 and named it "Takashimaya", is a landmark which is often ranked alongside Mitsukoshi main branch. The Nihonbashi branch was opened in 1933, since which it has had many celebrity customers known as outside customers, helped by its brand image as the department store which serves as the purveyor to the Imperial Household. Even if the number of customers in the store is low, it is the kind of symbolic high-class department store which makes lots of sales from its outside customers.
